Air Compressor History

Dec 11, 2024

The development history of air compressors can be traced back to several centuries ago, and here is the main course of its development:

1. **Early Development**:

- In 1640 AD, Germany produced a mechanical vacuum pump, which is considered the ancestor of modern air compressors.

- Around 1800, the UK produced the first single-stage reciprocating air compressor with an exhaust pressure of 1.38 MPa (gauge pressure).

- In 1829, the UK designed the first two-stage reciprocating air compressor with intermediate cooling.

2. **Development in the 19th Century**:

- In 1878, the Swiss Burkhardt Machinery Factory produced the first air compressor with a control slide valve for distribution

- In the same year, German H.Kriharz proposed the concept of an air compressor without internal compression, which later became the screw air compressor.

- In 1888, the Parisian wind system's compressed air station already had 14 reciprocating air compressors with a total power of 1500 kW.

3. **Early to Mid-20th Century**:

- In 1902, the American Ingersoll-Rand Company produced the first mobile reciprocating air compressor.

- In 1904, Sweden's Atlas developed the first piston air compressor.

- In 1931, the American Worthington Company produced the first opposed air compressor, which later evolved into today's BDC symmetrically balanced air and gas compressor series.

- In 1934, Germany's KSB Company produced the reciprocating cylinder oil-free lubrication air compressor.

4. **Development of Screw Air Compressors**:

- In 1934, Professor Alf Lysholm from the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden designed the screw air compressor and its rotor tooth profile, marking the beginning of the production and application of screw air compressors.

- In 1957, the oil-injected screw air compressor was introduced, which improved the shortcomings of previous screw air compressors and was widely applied.

5. **Development of Single-Screw Compressors**:

- In 1960, France's B.Zimmern proposed the concept of a single-screw compressor and obtained a patent. The first prototype was tested in 1962.

- By the end of the 1970s, countries such as the Netherlands, the UK, and Japan had developed single-screw compressors for refrigeration and air conditioning, available in open and semi-closed forms.

6. **Modern Air Compressor Technology Features**:

- At the beginning of the 20th century, the development of air compressors entered a new phase. German engineer Karl Rübin invented the screw air compressor. The screw air compressor compresses gas through the rotating motion of two screws, characterized by its small size, low noise, and high efficiency. The advent of screw air compressors greatly promoted the application of air compressors.

7. **Development in the 21st Century**:

- Entering the 21st century, new technologies for screw air compressors continue to emerge, processing precision is improved, and auxiliary equipment becomes more sophisticated. The performance is widely recognized, and the range of use continues to expand.

These key development milestones show the evolution of air compressors from simple mechanical devices to modern efficient, energy-saving, and intelligent equipment.
